Put your iPhone on the same Wi-Fi as your TV, open Plain Remote, and allow it to find devices on your local network when iOS asks. Your TV appears in the list; tap Add. If it does not appear, add it by its IP address, which is in the TV's network settings.
Roku players and Roku TVs work straight away. If buttons do nothing, on the Roku go to Settings, System, Advanced system settings, Control by mobile apps, and set Network access to Enabled.
The first time, the TV asks to allow Plain Remote: choose Allow with your TV remote. If you chose Deny, open Settings, General, External Device Manager, Device Connect Manager on the TV and allow it.
The first time, the TV asks to accept Plain Remote: choose Accept. If it never asks, turn on Mobile TV On (or LG Connect Apps) in the TV's connection or network settings.
The TV shows a 4 digit PIN the first time. Type it into Plain Remote. If no PIN appears, make sure the TV is on, not just in standby.
This covers Google TV and Android TV sets such as Philips, Sony, TCL and Hisense, and Chromecast with Google TV. The first time, the TV shows a 6 character code. Type it into Plain Remote. If no code appears, make sure the TV is on and Google TV is set up on it. The list of channels and apps is not available on these TVs; open apps from the TV's home screen with the arrows instead.
Plain Remote can turn TVs off. Many TVs switch off their network when they are off, so turning them on may still need the TV's own remote. Roku TVs with fast start enabled can usually be turned on.
The full remote is free for one TV, with no ads. Pro, a single payment, adds channels and apps, the phone keyboard, the touchpad and more TVs. To restore it on a new device: Settings, Restore purchase.
Plain Remote is an independent app and is not made or endorsed by Roku, Samsung, LG, Vizio or Google.
