Tap the plus button in your library. Paste or type text; enter a web address for an article; or open a PDF, text or RTF file from Files. With Pro you can also scan printed pages with the camera or pick photos of pages.
Pages behind a login or a paywall, and some sites that block apps, cannot be read. Open the page in Safari, select the text, copy it, and use Paste or type text instead.
Open the Settings app, then Accessibility, Spoken Content, Voices. Download an Enhanced or Premium voice. It is free from Apple, works offline, and appears in Plain Read's voice list (the sliders button while reading, then Voice).
If you have made a Personal Voice (Settings, Accessibility, Personal Voice), open the voice list in Plain Read and tap Use my Personal Voice, then allow access.
Tap the speed (1x) to choose from 0.5x to 3x. The arrows move a sentence back or forward; tapping a paragraph reads from there. The sliders button has a sleep timer that pauses reading after 10 to 60 minutes.
Plain Read keeps reading when you lock the phone or switch apps. Use the lock screen or Control Center to pause. A phone call pauses reading and it resumes afterwards when iOS allows.
Listening, voices, speeds and the sleep timer are free. The free library keeps 5 items; delete one to add another, or unlock Pro once for an unlimited library and page scanning. To restore Pro on a new device: Settings, Restore purchase.
