String Voc: measured versus expected

Expected string Voc is the datasheet module Voc summed over the modules in series, corrected to the actual cell temperature with the module Voc temperature coefficient. A measurement more than plus or minus 5 percent from the corrected expectation deserves investigation: wrong module count, a shorted bypass diode (low by roughly one module), a failed module, or a measurement error. Voc checks need at least 200 watts per square meter of irradiance to be meaningful; below that, readings drift and comparisons mislead.

Safe response

DC rated meter and leads, rated for the full system voltage (1500 volts on modern plants). Never measure across a string under load with a voltmeter set wrong.

Verify against

Record irradiance and module temperature with every reading; the Max String Size calculator computes corrected expectations.

String Isc and parallel comparison

Identical strings under the same stable sun should carry currents within a few percent of each other. A string deviating more than 5 percent from its identical neighbors indicates a fault: soiling, shading, module damage, connector resistance, or a failing bypass diode. Current comparisons need at least 600 watts per square meter of stable irradiance; a meaningful current and voltage curve trace needs at least 500. Compare like to like and measure neighbors within minutes of each other, because passing clouds destroy the comparison.

Safe response

Use a DC rated clamp meter. Opening string circuits under load draws an arc; never disconnect a loaded string connector.

Verify against

Log irradiance at the moment of each reading.

Insulation resistance quick thresholds

IEC 62446 1 sets minimum insulation resistance by system voltage class; the Insulation Resistance calculator holds the full table. Working rule of thumb for large plants: a healthy dry circuit reads well into the tens or hundreds of megohms; readings near 1 megohm are marginal and readings below the IEC minimum fail. Wet weather readings run lower; a circuit that fails wet and passes dry has a moisture ingress path that will worsen. Always disconnect surge protective devices before testing.

Safe response

Insulation testers apply high voltage: isolate the circuit, keep people clear of both ends, and discharge the circuit after testing.

Verify against

Use the test voltage class from IEC 62446 1 for the circuit under test.

Irradiance minimums for valid field tests

Minimum plane of array irradiance for each test to mean anything: 200 watts per square meter for Voc checks; 500 for a useful current and voltage curve trace; 600 for string current comparisons. Stability matters as much as magnitude: readings taken while cloud edges cross the array are not comparable. Use the met station POA value, or a handheld irradiance meter held in the module plane.

DC measurement hazard reminders

The DC field is energized whenever there is light. 1500 volt string circuits exceed the rating of common 1000 volt meters and leads; check the category and voltage rating printed on the meter and the leads before every use. DC arcs do not self extinguish the way AC arcs do: never open a connector, fuse holder, or terminal under load. Ground faults can put hazardous voltage on racking and enclosures that should be at ground potential.

Safe response

DC rated meter and leads rated at or above system voltage, arc flash PPE per the site study, and absence of voltage verification before touching conductors. If an insulation or ground fault alarm is active, stop and follow the ground fault decision tree.

Verify against

Meter and lead ratings are printed on the equipment; when in doubt, do not measure.
