Rack power density benchmarks#

Bands

label: Traditional enterprise. value: 3 to 8 kW per rack

label: Modern environments. value: 8 to 15 kW per rack

label: AI and high performance computing. value: above 20 kW per rack and climbing

Notes

Density is climbing quickly. Size cooling and distribution for the design target, not today only.

Delta T targets#

Bands

label: Modern high density target. value: about 20 to 30 F, 11 to 17 C

label: Below band. value: over cooling or airflow bypass

label: Above band. value: airflow shortfall or recirculation

Notes

An out of band delta T is a symptom. Confirm airflow and containment before adjusting setpoints.

Airflow needs by density#

Bands

label: High density racks. value: 1,500 to 2,500 cfm

label: Low density racks. value: 500 to 1,000 cfm

label: Rule of thumb. value: about 120 cfm per kW

Notes

Use the rule of thumb to sanity check a calculated airflow figure.

Arc flash awareness#

Bands

label: AI ready facilities. value: available fault current can exceed 100,000 A

label: Authority. value: the site arc flash study governs

Notes

This tool raises awareness only. Incident energy and boundaries come from the site arc flash study, never from an estimate.

Generator fuel notes#

Bands

label: Day tank. value: about 8 hours typical

label: Refuel. value: can be refueled while running

Notes

Fuel burn rises with load. Confirm the main tank and the refueling contract for extended outages.
